    • Yew Chung International School of Beijing offers a variety of scholarships to outstanding students in Secondary. Having spoken to scholars Francesco Babs and Sofia Dementyeva, we now discuss the application process with Assistant Admissions Manager Sara Wramner.

Please introduce the YCIS Beijing scholarship programme

YCIS Beijing offers one Full Achievement Scholarship (for all round academic and co-curricular talent), as well as subject scholarships in the areas of sport, art and music. These scholarships are available for new applicants to YCIS Beijing, but are not necessarily awarded every year.

What kind of things are you looking for?

For the Full Achievement Scholarship, we are looking for students with an exceptional academic record or ability, combined with excellence in sport or music or another extra-curricular activity. We also assess their character in interview, looking for students who can be enthusiastic, personable representatives of our school.

How do you assess for scholarships?

When a student applies to us, they complete a test and have a face-to-face interview with a member of staff. If, during the regular application process, we meet a student who appears to be especially talented, we invite them to apply for a scholarship.

Students are usually given around a week to complete the scholarship application form, which asks them to write an essay. They are then invited to be interviewed by members of the academic team.

We are looking for students who have all-round outstanding abilities, who we get along well with, and who can contribute positively to school life.

We assess purely on the merit on the applicant, and do not take into account other factors such as background or means.

Once awarded a scholarship, scholars are continuously assessed at school to make sure they are keeping up their performance.

      Why do we offer scholarships?

Scholarships are all about giving recognition to exceptional achievements. They also offer encouragement and motivation to our student scholars, and help them stand out when they apply to university.

What are the advantages of having a scholarship?

With lots of students having brilliant academic and extra-curricular achievements to their name, securing university places is an increasingly competitive process. A school scholarship is one way to help you stand out from the crowd.

The Full Achievement Award also covers a significant portion of the school fees – which is also an advantage!

      Who is this open to?

Scholarships are open to new students applying to YCIS Beijing’s Secondary school. We accept applications to our school at any time of year, and are always on the lookout for potential scholars.

      How do you apply?

To apply, you must go through the regular application process. We will contact you if we would like your child to apply for a scholarship.

Do you have any advice for students applying for a scholarship?

Make sure you have evidence of your achievements – for example medals and trophies, certificates or awards. If there is one area that you are particularly good at, for example swimming, don’t feel the need to also pursue volleyball, netball and Kung-Fu! It’s better to focus on your best area.
