    • Last March, Yew Chung International School of Beijing’s Parent Organisation hosted an Oscars Charity Ball to raise funds for Seeds of Hope and New Day Foster Home charities.  It was a fun-filled evening with performances by students, live auctions, and delicious food.

But in addition to the fun and entertainment, most importantly the event was able to raise 230,000 RMB to be spent on children in need.

Now several months later, we’d like to share an update of how the funds were used to provide medical treatment for two local children, Catherine and Ronan, who were in desperate need of life-saving heart operations.

      Catherine’s Operation Was Successful!

Though Catherine was originally told by a local hospital that her condition was too severe and risky to receive the heart surgery she needed, New Day Foster Home didn’t give up.  Instead, they contacted a top cardiologist in the United States who said that there was still hope.

US and Chinese doctors then discussed the issue and decided to go ahead with the surgery – which was a success!  Catherine is now improving faster than doctors originally thought.  She’s eating well and is on track for a full recovery!

      Roman is Improving Quickly!

For years, Ronan was unable to have the heart surgery he needed because doctors worried that his Pulmonary arteries were too weak.  However, through New Day’s continued efforts, a surgeon at Bayi Children’s Hospital agreed to perform the eight-hour surgery – which was also a success!

After only two days, Ronan was released from the ICU, and only nine days after the surgery he was discharged from the hospital and able to return to New Day.  The surgeon was also astonished at Ronan’s quick recovery and thanked New Day for trusting him with Ronan’s heart.

      Align with Love & Charity

At YCIS Beijing, there are many aspects to a child’s education that we aim to support and develop.  We hope that our students will enter the world with the skills and ability to secure a position in their ideal workplace; with the knowledge to understand themselves and their society, and with the heart and compassion to help those in greater need.  Part of our school motto is “To Align with Love and Charity”, which – through events like the PO Charity Ball and our dedicated Character Education Programme – come to life through the compassionate work of our students, parents and teachers.
