Bon Voyage Class of 2019
On Thursday 6 June, Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) bid our seniors "bon voyage" during our Year 13 Graduation. It was a wonderful day, filled with pride, joy, and a few tears as teachers, alumni, parents, friends and students all came together to celebrate the achievements of the graduating Class of 2019.
Dragon Boats & Zongzi!
Last week the Duan Wu Festival (端午节Duānwǔ jié) was observed across China. Better known to English speakers as the Dragon Boat Festival, this popular holiday is traditionally celebrated with Dragon Boat races. Across the country, people gathered to cheer on the colourful dragon boats, from parks to palaces, and even our school campus! That’s right, here at Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing), we held our very own dragon boat races for YCIS Beijing’s young scholars.
Just Another Brush on the Wall
Among the many highlights of any tour of the Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) campus are our murals. Displayed around the school, these beautiful works of art are due in large part to our talented art teachers and the outside artists we periodically welcome into our school community through our Artist-in-Residence Programme. After adding yet another lovely mural to our collection this year, we spoke with Secondary Art teacher, Allison Cusato who oversaw its creation.
A New Chapter in Early Childhood Education
Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, joined Chairperson of the Board of Governors of Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education, Dr Betty Chan, for the College’s Inauguration Ceremony. Mr Yeung and Dr Chan were also later joined by Founders of the “Heart to Heart Foundation, Ms Pamela Peck and Mr Paul Tse, in officiating the Grand Opening of the “Pamela Peck Discovery Space”, marking a new chapter in Early Childhood Education in Hong Kong
Beyond Bilingualism: Nurturing Bi-Cultural Learning in Secondary
At Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing), we have been holding a lot of Celebrations of Learning for our Secondary School Chinese programme students lately. As the school year draws to a close, our students are enjoying showing off all they have been learning about Chinese language and culture to their parents, peers and teachers in these dynamic, end of unit presentations. Our students are also beginning to look forward to what next school year will hold for them, and their 2019-2020 Chinese cultural exploration trips and festival celebrations are top of mind. This week we were joined once again by Amy Zhang, Secondary Chinese Co-ordinator, to discuss what bi-cultural learning means in practice at YCIS Beijing and how it forms an integral part of our Chinese programme in Secondary.
One Beautiful Night in Beijing!
Last weekend we held our annual Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) Charity Gala, celebrating the close to another spectacular school year and sharing our good fortunes through charity fundraising. This year’s theme was "One Night in Beijing" and what a beautiful night it was! The evening was filled with fantastic food, entertainment and good company as we forged new memories to last a lifetime with our parents, partners and the wider YCIS Beijing community.
YCIS Beijing's Got "G100" Talent
It is hard to take risks. To make yourself vulnerable and to showcase new skills. In our recent G100 mini-project for Lower Secondary at Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing), students were challenged to tackle a new skill and share it with their classmates. Students in Years 6-8 were given a few weeks to decide on a new skill and then practise it, to prepare for a one-minute demonstration before an audience of their peers. And boy did they step up to the challenge!
From Strength to Strength: YCIS Beijing’s Secondary School Chinese Programme
Last week at Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing), we held Celebrations of Learning for our Lower Secondary School Chinese as an Additional Language (CAL) and Chinese Literature and Language (CLL) learners (our more advanced Chinese students). Held at the end of each unit of study, Celebrations of Learning at YCIS Beijing are authentic opportunities for our students to demonstrate what they have just learnt and why it matters, to peers, teachers and parents. Following the students’ engaging presentations we spoke with Amy Zhang, Secondary Chinese Co-ordinator about the strengths of YCIS Beijing’s Chinese programme in Secondary School.
Learning in the Park Series: Primary School
Educators at Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) believe in taking full advantage of our unique position as a school in a park, to augment their lessons. YCIS Beijing’s campus being adjacent to Honglingjin Park (HLJ), allows us to extend our learning spaces into the natural environment. We frequently conduct classes in the park across all levels of our school. Whether it’s our Secondary School students interviewing the park’s visitors to practice their Chinese, our Early Childhood Education (ECE) students learning about creepy crawlies up close, or our Primary School students exploring animal habitats in context, our entire school greatly benefits from the HLJ as natural, learning resource.
