Sports Round-Up: ACAMIS Football, MSB Swim Meet, U14 Girls Basketball and ISAC Basketball Tournament

ACAMIS Football Tournament

On 18 - 20 April, 11 Yew Chung International School of Beijing took part in the ACAMIS Boys Football Tournament at Wellington College in Shanghai.

Six schools took part in the competition: Wellington College, YCIS Shanghai, CISB, QISS, and the American School of Ulaanbaatar. YCIS Beijing came fourth with Marco Tong scoring a hat-trick and Peter Qin scoring two amazing long-range goals.

Richard Payne who accompanied the team with Coach Michael Warner commented:

“We were competitive in every game and could have finished second. We have almost the same squad for next year so they better watch out for us next time.”

MSB Invitational Swim Meet

On Saturday 20 April, YCIS Beijing sent 14 student-athletes to the Montessori School of Beijing (MSB) Invitational Swim Meet. While our Scorpions swam valiantly, they did not bring home any victories this time.

Jim Sweeney who travelled with the swimming Scorpions to the meet stated:

“The competitors were a credit to our school once again. The patience they demonstrate while waiting to compete and then their will to win fairly astounds me.”

U14 YCIS Girls Basketball

On Saturday 20 April, YCIS Beijing sent a team of eight U14 girls basketball players to battle at the International School of Tianjin. Our brave Scorpions went head-to-head with student-athletes from SMIC, BCIS, BIBA and IST. Our Scorpions fought bravely with Carina Leung (Year 6) sinking a string of free throws, while Annabelle Payne (Year 6) and Jenny Yu (Year 6) intercepted their rivals plays at every turn and stole the ball at every opportunity. Aoife Savage (Year 9) also put major work applying maximum pressure on the opposition’s defence. Despite the valiant effort, our Scorpions weren’t able to bring home the win, but all of our players stepped up at the match and made us proud.

YCIS Beijing’s Head of English, Rebecca Flavin who chaperoned the trip shared her thoughts:

"All the players represented the school and themselves in a shining light. Their positive energy and perseverance made the day enjoyable to all and we look forward to the next season."

U14 ISAC MS Basketball Tournament

On Saturday 20 April, our U14 boys basketball team travelled to the British School of Beijing (BSB) for the U14 ISAC MS Basketball Tournament.

Our team of nine boys did well, with standout performances from Calvin (Seon Woo Yang) who played hard on offence and delivered many rebounds; Tommy (Guanyu Zhao) was very good on defence. He was tasked with defending TEDA’s key offensive player and held him nearly scoreless until the fourth quarter. We won one game and nearly won a second (losing by one point), and brought home an award for sportsmanship.

Nate Noorlander who escorted the boys to the tournament commented:

“The boys played their best game of the season against TEDA; in the end, they lost by one point, but their effort and execution were excellent.”

Congratulations to all of our teams and especially our star players!
