Primary Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs)

At Yew Chung International School of Beijing, we offer an exciting range of Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) run by various professional sport coaches.

We have three rounds of CCAs per year. All clubs are run on a first come first served basis, and each lasts for 8 weeks at a time. Making sure children have lots of opportunities to be active and exercise is a key ethos at YCIS, and we encourage all children to take part in CCAs throughout the year.

These co-curricular activities are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and students can choose one or both days, depending on their interests. Some activities are free while others may have a fee attached to them. CCAs are run by both teachers and outside vendors. The activities include Homework Club, Lego Club, Minecraft, Kung Fu, Tennis, Hip-hop Dancing, Basketball, Science Activities, Magic Shows, Baking, Calligraphy, and many more.

Sports Programme in Primary

Here at Yew Chung International School of Beijing, we strive to make sure that Physical Education is taught to an excellent standard, with enjoyment at the heart of our ethos. Physical Education provides an understanding of health through play, competitive sport, high-quality curriculum provision, and out-of-hours learning.

Physical education adopts a holistic approach and provides children with the fundamental and unique opportunity to develop physically, psychologically, emotionally and socially through their participation in a range of physical activities. At YCIS Beijing, we adopt a positive and proactive approach to physical activity and healthy living across the school, which is reinforced to encourage and promote a long-lasting relationship with sport and physical education.

Primary students attend PE lessons each week, with many Upper Primary students participating in various inter-school competitions, including football, badminton, handball and swimming.

Sports Programme in Secondary

The Physical Education Department provides an exciting and engaging learning experience for all. Through offering a wide range of courses and activities to all year groups, we encourage our young people to take ownership of their own physical, emotional and mental wellbeing by building their knowledge and understanding of diet and exercise.

Pupils will partake and be assessed in a range of activities throughout their time in the Physical Education department. These include, but are not limited to, football, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, swimming and fitness.

Through all of these experiences, our students will also develop skills needed for learning, life and work.

Pupils who are skilled and motivated enough may sign up for our IGCSE Physical Education course. This course develops students’ physical skills in addition to their knowledge and understanding of sport and exercise. Pupils who succeed in this course may be interested in working in careers such as a sports scientist, PE teacher, physiotherapist, sports coach/consultant, diet and fitness instructor, etc.

Secondary Co-Curricular Activities

We believe that involvement in clubs and organizations is as essential as what students do in the classroom. Our diverse and exciting Sports Programme is an integral part of life at YCIS Beijing. All students are encouraged to take full advantage of our wide-ranging programme, which offers opportunities to train and compete in a range of sports.

Our core sports of basketball, football and volleyball run over three separate seasons, meaning pupils can be involved in all three if they wish! Pupils competing in these sports will have the opportunity to work hard, make friends, and develop their teamwork and communication skills, as well as to compete in games all over Beijing and China!

Teaching staff are always on the lookout for new areas in which to generate student interest. If students wish to try an activity not currently running, all they need do is ask, and it soon could be.

Our students compete in a range of sporting disciplines by taking part in events organised by ISAC (International Schools Athletic Conference) and ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International Schools). The events take students to major cities in China to compete in sports such as basketball, golf, volleyball, soccer, badminton and swimming. These experiences support our Physical Education programme which exposes students to the skills of each discipline.

Arts Activities in Primary

At YCIS Beijing we provide exciting arts extra-curricular activities. Students have the opportunity to take a CCA that suits their interests and skills. Our programme changes annually to suit the interests of our students, and we make sure that what we deliver is of the highest standard. In Primary, we offer opportunities such as the following:

  • Year 3-5 Musical – A yearly production that focuses on singing, dancing and acting. Students have the opportunity to audition for a main part or join the ensemble as a chorus member. Our productions are always well-known musicals.
  • Orchestra – Orchestra runs weekly throughout each CCA round. Students learn to play as an ensemble on their learned instrument.
  • Violin Practice – This runs before school and allows students in Years 1-3 to learn more about the violin. Our primary violin teachers will work with your child to develop their skills.
  • Choral Groups – Each year we run a Primary choral group before the Christmas Concert.

Arts Activities in Secondary

Our annual Performing Arts Concerts are a collaborative experience allowing students from all years in Secondary to connect and experience the thrills of performance. Dance, drama and music disciplines take centre stage, but students also learn backstage craft and the logistics of putting on a performance. Students learn to assume responsibility as they help younger ones meet the performance requirements. Other opportunities in Secondary School are:

  • Whole Secondary Production (Drama or Musical) – Each year we have a yearly production for Secondary students. This production is either a musical or drama production. Recent examples include ‘Legally Blonde – The Musical’ and ‘Laughter and Latte: A Night of Two One-Act Plays’.
  • Orchestra – This is an ongoing CCA that runs for the entire school year. Students are invited to join if they play an instrument. This ensemble plays exciting and engaging music!
  • Photography Club / Art CCA – Each year we have multiple Visual Art CCA’s that run based on the skills and interests of our students. Our Visual Arts team decides on the appropriate CCAs to run.

Field Trips in Primary

All year levels participate in field trips every year, in and around Beijing. The trips will be tied to what students are covering or working on in class. Trip destinations include the Green Cow Organic Farm, Prince Gong’s Mansion, Beijing Puppet Theatre, Beijing Zoo, Capital Museum, Wali Park, Science Museum and Beijing Butterfly Farm.

Experiencing China

The Experiencing China Programme sends our Secondary School students to various parts of China to gain first-hand experience of life beyond Beijing. Students visiting iconic sites relating to Chinese history and spending time with people living in a rural environment acquire new understanding and appreciation of the host country. Students learn much from one another as they travel to and from Beijing and learn together through lectures, practical workshops and challenging activities such as mountain biking and Shaolin Temple Kung Fu.
