Student Leadership

At Yew Chung International School of Beijing we believe that our programme of global education primes our graduates to become tomorrow's leaders. To set them on the right path we offer a programme of Student Leadership. Students develop organisational and management skills and an increased sense of responsibility through tasks such as leading assemblies, planning award ceremonies and graduation celebrations.

Senior Leadership Team

Student Leaders are a small group of Year 12 students who are selected for their potential as leaders and elected by the Secondary Section. Throughout their Year 12 they are mentored by school staff and management to assume greater responsibility. They are then able, in turn, to offer mentoring to younger students and especially to the Junior Student Leadership team. Student Leaders welcome important visitors and new students, give school tours, are Masters of Ceremony at assemblies and often manage important events. They are confident, accomplished students who are excellent role models and help provide a positive school environment to their peers. All students in Years 10 and 11 develop their leadership skills and global perspective during Character Education classes. Rather than have a specific group of leaders at this level all students are encouraged to be involved. Students gain additional leadership experience through attending the Global Youth Leaders Conference (GYLC) held in New York each year, and participating in extra-curricular clubs such as the Model United Nations (MUN), Speech and Debating Club, the Global Issues Club and the Scholar's Cup.

Junior Leadership Team

The Junior Student Leadership team consists of approximately 8-10 students from each year group (Years 7-9). These students are nominated by the Character Education team. The main objective of the Junior Student Leadership team is to have four charity/community activities throughout the school year. Examples are the Packs of Hope, Coal for Kids, clothes drive for washing machines, activities with the Lu Bo Migrant School, Green Day and the Global Community Day. Funds are raised through activities in conjunction with the Sports and Performing Arts Departments and through school dances, mufti days and fund raising through food stalls and music performances. The Junior Student Leaders are mentored by the Senior Leadership team and work alongside them in the organisation and planning of any event.
