Year 5 students at YCIS Beijing engaged in multiple-intelligence learning with a topic lesson titled “We have power!” From the circuit power in electricity, mental math power, and the power to make change, students are learning that there is power all around them.
Year 5 students brainstormed how they could make change within their school. Through a series of discussions facilitated by the Co-Teachers, each Year 5 class decided they could create an impact with a charity fundraiser. Donations raised would be given to “Seeds of Hope”.
The plan of the class of Ms. Kang and Ms. Lin was to set up a stall to sell lemonade. Roles and responsibilities were decided among classmates and a promotion scheme was put in place. Presentations by the students to Primary classes taught a valuable lesson on the power to create awareness of the lemonade sales at recess. For two days, Ms. Kang and Ms. Lin ‘s students sold lemonade next to other Year 5 class booths. Each offered a different sweet for sale.
The result was a powerful contribution to the Seeds of Hope goal at YCIS Beijing. Year 5 students raised over RMB 3,000 yuan; the lemonade stand raised RMB 1,000 yuan.
