Arts and Music play an important role in the school life of Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing).
Studying these disciplines develops creativity and personal expression. The study of Art and Music reinforces the concept of global education as students learn to appreciate different cultures through understanding world art and music. By studying at YCIS Beijing your child will have, at least, a basic understanding and appreciation of art and perhaps discover a talent which will be nurtured and developed by our outstanding, dedicated teaching staff.
Art
Art forms a core part of YCIS Beijing's commitment to a fully rounded and balanced education from Kindergarten onwards and the walls of our school are adorned with the results of our students' work. Art stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Art allows our students to express what they see, think and feel about the world around them. As well as academic programmes, YCIS Beijing offers a range of art- and craft-based clubs and after school activities.
Artist-in-Residence
Mr. Stefan Fler has been the Artist-in-Residence in YCIS Beijing since 2008. As a professional photographer and designer Mr. Fler's involvement has benefitted students by leading a photography club and conceiving and designing the roof-top golf course. This programme is unique amongst Beijing's international schools.
Music
Research shows that music training enhances a child's spatial-temporal reasoning, leading to improved performance in mathematics, memory span and intellectual development. As such students receive compulsory violin lessons from K4 to Year 3 and optional violin lessons thereafter. YCIS Beijing students also receive regular music classes from Year 1 onwards. Additional music programmes are offered as part of the After School Activities programme. All of these areas ensure the halls of the YCIS Beijing campus are alive with music.
Performing Arts
The active Performing Arts department organises a range of performances throughout the year giving students ample opportunities to display the skills they have learned in class, music tuition and after school activities. Students also learn valuable organisational and team work skills by planning and preparing for the performance. Lower Secondary students have the chance to try out different disciplines (choir, orchestra and drama) through the Performing Arts rotation system.
Art and Music are also offered as academic courses at IGCSE and IB level.
