Kindergarten 4 (K4) at Yew Chung International School of Beijing is a full-day programme for four-year-old children.
K4 builds on the programmes developed in K2 and K3 classes. All subject areas are integrated into a play-based, child-focused philosophy in which children are immersed in the sounds, letters and characters that form the English and Chinese languages. Big books and stories are used as a focus for our literacy syllabus, where children are invited to behave as readers from the start. Using big books and stories in shared reading provides collaborative language situations where teachers are able to incidentally attend to aspects of phonics and Chinese characters in common use, as we incorporate many problem-solving activities for children.
In March, K4 children begin a 3-month transition process. The purpose is for children and families to feel informed, supported and excited about transition from K4 into Year 1 and that children will experience a positive start to Year 1 with a smooth transition from the child-centred approach in ECE to the more teacher-directed approach in Year 1.
